As the Artistic Director of JPAP David coaches extensively in all the UK Conservatories and beyond. He is often seen coaching and auditioning singers across the world - from South Africa to South America, Europe and beyond, he is scouting for the next generation of opera stars. 
David frequently serves as a jury member in the majority of prestigious international singing competitions.

Areas of coaching are musical phrasing, languages, style and repertoire.

Elaine is a stage director with an extensive track record in the UK and international scene. Having served as a director at the Royal Opera House before leading the Artistic Administration & Casting department at the Scottish Opera, she worked with the top opera makes - directors, conductors and artists of our times.

 

Areas of coaching are acting, interpretation and presentation.

Anush Hovhannisyan

Award-winning singer

Founder of the Armenian Opera Workshop

​

Anush is a graduate of Yerevan State Conservatory and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She started her career at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden as a member of the Jette Parker Artists Programme.

​

As a keen mentor to young artists, Anush has been serving as a Casting Director of the New Generation Festival and the Artistic Adviser to Mascarade Opera Studio in Florence. She is the Patron of Opera Caledonia and the Advisory Board member of the National Student Opera Society UK.

How to apply

Guidelines 

  • Send us your professional CV in pdf format including your contact details and date of birth. Download a CV template here

  • Send us Youtube links of video recordings of 2 opera arias of your choice. The video recording could be made using your phone. It should present you singing arias from operatic repertoire from memory with live piano accompaniment. Please note, we won't be able to download any of the videos

  • You should be between 18-32 years old

  • You should be still studying or having graduated from a conservatory in the last 10 years

What to expect

Preliminary schedule

4, 5, 6, 7 July 2023: 11.15 - 17.00 coaching session with David Gowland and Elaine Kidd

8 July 2023: 11.30 - 13.00 Questions & Answers session with David Gowland and Anush Hovhannisyan

Content of masterclasses

The coaches will work on musical phrasing, interpretation, language, style and presentation

The Q&A session will be dedicated to career advancement, repertoire choices and the questions of other participants

The language of the course is English

Active Participants

  • Will be scheduled for individual sessions with the coaches as well as be invited to observe the classes of others

  • Will be expected to present 3 arias (from French, Italian, German and Russian operas) and one song 

  • The repertoire must be performed from memory 

Passive Participants

  • Will be invited to observe the classes

  • Are welcome to participate in the Questions & Answers session 

Travel & Accommodation

The participants travelling to Armenia should make their arrangements for travel and accommodation in Yerevan
